Overview

Staying at COMO Maalifushi over the Christmas period felt like a very different kind of Maldives experience.

If I had to describe it in one word, it would be balance.

Because in a destination where many resorts try to impress with scale, over-design, or constant stimulation, COMO Maalifushi goes in the opposite direction. Everything here feels more refined, quieter, and intentionally simple — but in a way that is very hard to execute properly.

We stayed in an Overwater Villa on the sunset side, and from the very first moment, there was this feeling that nothing was trying too hard. The design is clean, natural, almost minimal, but still warm and luxurious at the same time. It’s the kind of place where you don’t get distracted — you just enjoy where you are.

What I personally loved is that the island doesn’t feel overcrowded or overly structured. There’s space, there’s silence, and there’s a certain rhythm that naturally slows you down. Especially during Christmas, when many places become more chaotic, here everything remained calm, very well balanced, and genuinely relaxing.

The lagoon is exactly what you expect from the Maldives — crystal clear water, soft colors, and that sense of endless horizon — but combined with the overall atmosphere of the resort, it feels even more immersive.

And then there’s the wellness side, which is a big part of COMO’s identity. You feel it from the beginning — not in an obvious way, but in how everything is designed to make you feel better, lighter, more present.

COMO Maalifushi is not about being the most spectacular resort in the Maldives.

It’s about being one of the most effortlessly elegant and well-balanced ones — and that’s exactly what makes it stand out.

ABOUT THE DESTINATION

The Maldives is one of those destinations that almost feels unreal until you actually experience it.

But what I’ve learned over time is that not all Maldives islands feel the same. The concept might look similar — overwater villas, turquoise water, white sand — but the atmosphere can change completely depending on where you stay.

COMO Maalifushi is located in the Thaa Atoll, which is one of the more untouched and less developed areas of the Maldives. And you feel that immediately. The water looks cleaner, the surroundings feel more raw, and overall there’s a stronger sense of being far away from everything.

That’s what makes this destination special. It’s not just about beauty — it’s about distance from noise.

Especially during the Christmas period, when many Maldives resorts are fully booked and very active, here the experience still felt calm and controlled. Nothing felt chaotic, nothing felt forced. You still get that festive energy, but in a much more relaxed and elegant way.

Another thing I always appreciate in the Maldives is how quickly you adapt to a different rhythm. Days become simpler: waking up with the light, spending time in the water, long lunches, sunsets, and slow evenings. And in a place like COMO Maalifushi, that rhythm feels even more natural.

The Maldives is often seen as a “once-in-a-lifetime” destination, but the truth is — when you choose the right island — it becomes something more than that.

It becomes a place where you actually reset.

What we liked most

  1. Sunset Overwater Villa Living: Staying in an overwater villa on the sunset side completely defines the experience here. Every afternoon naturally turns into a moment — the light, the colors, the reflection on the water. It’s simple, but it never gets repetitive.

  2. That Effortless SimplicityWhat I appreciated most is that nothing feels forced. No over-designed spaces, no unnecessary “wow effect”. Just clean architecture, natural materials, and a very balanced aesthetic that lets the surroundings do the work.

  3. A Different Kind of Maldives Atmosphere: The island feels more quiet and untouched compared to many other resorts. There’s less noise, less movement, and more space to actually disconnect. You feel it especially when walking around — it’s calm, almost meditative.

  4. The COMO Shambhala Spa: This was one of the real highlights. The spa is not just beautiful — it’s designed around a full wellness philosophy. Treatments, spaces, and even the energy of the place feel very intentional. It’s one of those spas where you don’t just relax, you actually reset.

  5. Water That Feels Unreal: Even for the Maldives, the water here stands out. The clarity, the colors, the contrast between deep and shallow areas — everything feels incredibly pure. Whether you’re swimming, snorkeling, or just looking at it, it’s constantly impressive.

  6. The Christmas Period Without Chaos: Spending Christmas here was surprisingly peaceful. The resort keeps the festive atmosphere, but in a very controlled and elegant way. You feel the occasion, but without losing that sense of calm that makes the Maldives special.

  7. A Place That Slows You Down Naturally: There’s something about COMO Maalifushi that changes your rhythm without you even noticing. You wake up slower, you move slower, you stay longer in each moment. And that’s probably the most valuable part of the whole experience.

Suites

During our stay, we stayed in an Overwater Villa on the sunset side, and this is really where the whole COMO Maalifushi experience comes to life.

The first thing you notice is the design. It’s very clean, very natural, almost minimal — but still warm and refined. There’s no excess, no unnecessary details. Everything feels intentional, and that creates a very calming atmosphere from the moment you walk in.

The villa is spacious, with a layout that flows naturally between indoor and outdoor areas. The bedroom opens directly towards the ocean, so the view is always there — whether you’re waking up, relaxing during the day, or just lying in bed in the evening.

But the real highlight is the outdoor deck.

This is where we spent most of our time. You have direct access to the lagoon, plenty of space to relax, and that uninterrupted view of the horizon. And being on the sunset side makes a big difference — every afternoon becomes a moment you look forward to.

There’s something very simple but powerful about just being there, watching the light slowly change over the water. No music, no distractions — just the sound of the ocean and the colors shifting in front of you.

The overall feeling of the villa is privacy and ease. Nothing feels staged, nothing feels overdone. It’s a space that adapts to your rhythm rather than forcing one.

And in a destination like the Maldives, that makes all the difference.

Food and Drink

Food at COMO Maalifushi follows the same philosophy as the rest of the resort: clean, balanced, and never excessive.

You don’t come here for heavy, over-the-top dining experiences. You come here for something more refined — food that feels good, tastes fresh, and fits perfectly with the overall rhythm of the island.

The main restaurant is Madi, where you have breakfast and also international dining options. This is where most of the day starts, and the setting plays a big role — right by the beach, very open, very relaxed. Breakfast is well done, with a mix of classic options and healthier choices, all presented in a simple but elegant way.

Then there’s Tai, which is probably the most iconic dining venue of the resort. It’s built over the water and focuses on Japanese-inspired cuisine. The atmosphere here is very special, especially in the evening — minimal lighting, the sound of the ocean underneath, and that feeling of being completely surrounded by water. It’s not just about the food, it’s about the whole setting.

For something more casual, Thila works perfectly during the day. It’s connected to the pool area and is ideal for lighter meals, snacks, or just a relaxed lunch without breaking the flow of the day.

One thing that stands out is the COMO Shambhala Cuisine, which is integrated into the menus. This is their wellness-focused approach to food — lighter dishes, clean ingredients, and combinations designed to make you feel good rather than heavy. It fits perfectly with the overall identity of the resort.

Overall, the food & drinks offering is not about having endless options.

It’s about having the right options, done properly, in settings that make you want to stay a little longer. Food at COMO Maalifushi follows the same philosophy as the rest of the resort: clean, balanced, and never excessive.

Services and facilities

What defines COMO Maalifushi on a deeper level is its wellness-driven approach. Everything is designed to make you feel lighter, more relaxed, and more connected to your surroundings — not just entertained.

The highlight here is without any doubt the COMO Shambhala Retreat. This is not just a spa, it’s a full concept. From the design of the treatment rooms to the therapies themselves, everything feels intentional and very well thought out. The environment is calm, minimal, and extremely peaceful — you walk in and immediately feel a shift in energy.

Treatments are focused not only on relaxation but also on real recovery and balance, which makes a big difference compared to more standard resort spas. It’s one of those places where you don’t just enjoy the moment — you actually feel the benefit after.

The main pool area follows the same philosophy. Overlooking the lagoon, it’s quiet, spacious, and never too busy. It’s the kind of place where you can spend hours without even noticing time passing.

For those who want to stay active, the resort offers a gym and daily yoga sessions, often set in open-air spaces with direct views of the ocean. Even something as simple as a morning stretch feels elevated in this environment.

Of course, being in the Maldives, the ocean is a big part of the experience. Snorkeling here is easily accessible, with clear water and vibrant marine life just steps away from the villa. You don’t need to plan too much — you just go.

The beach areas are very clean, quiet, and intentionally minimal. No overcrowding, no unnecessary setups — just space, nature, and that feeling of simplicity that defines the whole resort.

Service throughout the island is very consistent. It’s attentive but never intrusive, always aligned with the overall tone of the property. Everything feels smooth, natural, and well coordinated.

Overall, the strength of COMO Maalifushi is not in having the most facilities —

it’s in having the right ones, perfectly aligned with a clear philosophy.

Our experience

Looking back at our stay at COMO Maalifushi, what really stands out is how effortless everything felt.

There was no moment where something tried to impress too much. No forced experiences, no unnecessary complexity. Just a very clear identity, executed properly from beginning to end.

The Overwater Villa on the sunset side played a big role in that. It became our space, our rhythm. Waking up with the ocean, spending time on the deck, and then watching the light slowly change in the evening — these are the kind of moments that define the stay without needing anything else.

The COMO Shambhala spa added another layer to the experience. It’s not just about relaxing for an hour — it’s something deeper. You leave feeling different, more balanced, more present. And that aligns perfectly with the overall energy of the island.

What I appreciated most is that this is not a resort that tries to be everything for everyone.

It knows exactly what it is: a calm, refined, wellness-driven escape.

And that clarity is what makes it work so well.

Would I recommend it? Yes — especially for couples or anyone looking for a Maldives experience that feels more authentic, minimal, and balanced, rather than overly designed or overly busy.

It’s not about constant stimulation.

It’s about finding your own pace again.

And for me, that’s exactly what made this stay memorable.
