The Best Memberships for Luxury Hotels, and When to Skip Them

There are three kinds of luxury hotel membership: private rates, flash sales and perks. They get lumped together, yet they solve different problems, and for plenty of travellers the right answer is a free programme.

One disclosure first: Luxintravels VIP is ours and it's on this list. Details come from each company's own pages, checked on 4 November 2026. The savings below are what each company states, and we have not tested them independently.

The short answer

If you book expensive hotels and want a lower room price, look at private rate clubs. If you want breakfast and credits at a normal price, look at perks programmes. If you stay in a hotel a couple of times a year, start with the free options and only pay when you've seen a real gap on a real trip.

Private rate clubs

These give you a lower room price through a closed channel. Our guide explains how private hotel rates work.

  • Overgo. Lists $300 a year, renewing automatically. It states savings of 15% to 40% and refunds within 30 days only if you haven't booked. Its FAQ is candid that you may get no points or status, and that some stays show little or no difference. It suits frequent US travellers at big luxury chains.

  • Boutique Hotel Club. £390 a year, by application, and you can be turned down. It states 15% to 35% below public prices on more than 500 independent hotels in 76 countries. It suits people who prefer small hotels and like a curated list. The collection is deliberately not complete.

  • Luxintravels VIP. Our membership. Members can save up to 60%, with hotels in more than 150 countries, and more than 48,000 members have joined. The saving varies by hotel and date, and we have few independent reviews so far, so test it on a real trip. It suits people who already stay in luxury hotels and want to compare a private rate. The signup page shows the current plans.

Perks programmes

These usually leave the price close to normal and add extras.

  • Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts. Breakfast for two, a $100 credit, a guaranteed 4pm check-out and an upgrade when available, on every booking. You need an eligible Amex card. It's good if you already hold the card.

  • Virtuoso. You reach it through a travel advisor rather than a sign-up page. On the offer we read, the extras were breakfast, a credit and an upgrade if available. It suits anyone who wants a person handling a complicated trip.

  • GoldSmith by Mr & Mrs Smith. $600 a year, or $60 a month with a 12-month minimum, with 3% credit on bookings and a free upgrade when available. The page showed "Out of stock" when we read it, so check that it's open. Mr & Mrs Smith has a 4.6 score on Trustpilot from 7,750 reviews.

Free options worth using first

You lose nothing by trying these before paying for anything.

  • Booking Genius. 10% to 20% on participating properties, plus breakfast and upgrades on selected stays at higher levels.

  • Marriott Bonvoy and World of Hyatt. Free member rates, and points if you stay loyal to one chain.

  • Agoda VIP. Tiered rates for logged-in users on participating properties. It's automatic, and worth a look for trips in Asia.

  • Secret Escapes. Time-limited offers, free to join. You choose from what's on sale, so it won't help if you already know which hotel you want.

How to choose

Match the membership to how you travel:

  • Lowest price on a hotel you already picked: a private rate club.

  • Extras at a normal price: a perks programme.

  • Status and points: book direct with your chain.

  • Someone to plan it for you: a Virtuoso advisor.

  • Small independent hotels: Boutique Hotel Club.

When no membership is worth it

Skip all of them if any of these apply:

  • You travel once or twice a year on a modest budget. The fee may eat most of the saving. Free programmes will do.

  • Your elite status already gets you upgrades. Third-party bookings often lose that recognition.

  • You always need free cancellation. Member rates can have stricter terms, so read them first.

  • You haven't compared. Run one real trip through the free options first. If the paid club doesn't beat them, keep your money.

Prices and terms come from each company's own page on 4 November 2026 and they change often, so check them before you pay.
