Private Rate or Book Direct? When Each One Wins

Hotels want you to book direct. Membership platforms, ours included, want you to book with them. Both will tell you it's the smart choice. The honest answer depends on who you are and what the stay is for.

Luxintravels VIP is our own membership, so we have a side here. This article includes the cases where you should ignore us.

The short answer

Book direct when the relationship with the hotel is worth more than the saving. Take the private rate when the saving is real and you don't need anything special from the hotel.

When booking direct wins

  • You have elite status. Points and status benefits usually depend on a direct booking. If your status gets you suite upgrades, a third-party rate can cost you more than it saves.

  • You're a regular. The hotel that knows you will look after you whichever way you book, but a direct booking makes that relationship easier.

  • The trip is complicated. Connecting rooms, an anniversary set-up or a long list of requests go more smoothly when you're talking to the hotel from the start.

  • You may need to change plans. Direct rates are often easier to change. Read the terms on both.

  • The price is the same. When there's no real gap, book direct and keep the points.

Some hotels also offer extras for booking direct. On Ios, for example, Agalia Luxury Suites lists a private port transfer and a welcome bottle for direct guests. Add those to the comparison.

When a private rate wins

  • You don't collect points. If you stay with a different brand each trip, status isn't doing anything for you.

  • It's a big-ticket stay. On an expensive room, a percentage saving is real money, and it's often larger than the value of any points you'd earn.

  • You want a longer stay. The saving grows with every night. On a long stay, that can pay for an extra night or two.

  • You've compared and the gap is real. That's the only condition that counts.

The test

Run this on your next trip. It takes five minutes:

  • Pick the exact hotel, room type and dates.

  • Note the hotel's direct price, logged in to its loyalty programme.

  • Note the private rate for the same room and the same dates.

  • Compare the totals with taxes, and check breakfast and the cancellation terms.

  • Put a value on what you'd lose. Be honest about the points: if you never spend them, they're worth nothing.

If the private rate still wins by a clear margin, take it. If it's close, book direct.

Two things people get wrong

"A private rate means worse treatment." At the good hotels, you're a guest in a room, and the front desk has no reason to treat you badly. It's fair to say that upgrades tend to go to direct and elite guests first, so don't count on one.

"Direct is always cheapest." It sometimes is, and hotels do offer good direct deals. Sometimes it isn't. The only way to know is to compare on the day, because neither claim holds across every hotel and date.
