Why a Cheap Hotel Rate Is Not Always Cheap

The lowest number on the page often isn't the lowest price. Two rates for the same hotel can look far apart, then end up the same once you add everything in. Sometimes the cheap one even costs more.
We sell private hotel rates, so we care about this comparison being fair, including when it goes against us. Here's what to check, in the order that catches the most mistakes.
1. The total, with taxes and fees
Some sites show the room price first and add taxes later. In the United States, the FTC's rule on junk fees has required the total price for short-term lodging to be shown up front since May 2025. Other places have different rules, so don't assume.
Always compare the final figure on the last page before payment.
2. Resort and destination fees
Many beach and city hotels charge a daily fee for things like the pool, the Wi-Fi or the gym. Sometimes it's in the price you see, and sometimes it's charged at the desk when you check out. Read the small print on the rate, or ask the hotel by email. Over a week, it adds up.
3. Breakfast
A rate without breakfast can look like a bargain until you see what breakfast costs at the hotel. At a luxury resort with nothing else nearby, you'll be eating there anyway. Compare breakfast against breakfast.
4. The cancellation terms
A non-refundable rate should be cheaper, because you're taking the risk. If you compare it with a free-cancellation rate, you're comparing two different products. Ask yourself how sure you really are about those dates, and what you'd lose if a flight changes.
5. The room
"Deluxe" means nothing on its own. One site's cheapest room can be the one facing the car park, while the other site is quoting a sea view. Match the room name word for word, and check the size and the view. When the names differ, write to the hotel and ask.
6. The currency and the card
A price in another currency moves with the exchange rate, and your card may add a fee on top. If you pay at the hotel weeks later, the rate on the day decides what you actually pay. Check the amount in your own currency, and check what your card charges.
A quick way to compare
Write these down for each option, in one line each:
Final total, in your own currency
Daily fees not yet included
Breakfast, yes or no
Last free cancellation date
Exact room name and view
Points or status you'd earn
It takes five minutes. Once it's written down, the answer is usually obvious.
Where the percentages mislead
Be wary of any headline percentage, including ours. A big saving against an inflated "was" price means nothing. Compare against the price you could actually book today, for the same room with the same conditions.
That's the test we suggest for our own platform. Luxintravels VIP is our membership, and members can save up to 60%. The saving changes by hotel and date, and sometimes it's small. Run the list above before you decide. If you want to understand where the gap comes from, read how private hotel rates work, and for the direct option, read private rate or book direct.
